Creating A Recode

mTABWin00000026.gif Step 1: Create Recode Description

All recode questions need to be given a unique recode description. This description identifies your recode within the Available Question and Topics list.

  1. Choose one of the following:

    • Click on the Recode Description text box located near the top of the Recode Editor screen.

    • Press ALT+R.

  1. Type in the desired Recode Description. For example, type in College / Non-College Education. Once you have typed in the desired description, press the TAB key, or click on the any other section of the recode editor to complete the entry.

Step 2: Create New Response Labels

  1. Select the new label(s) you wish to map to, choose one of the following:

    • Click the left mouse button on the new label to which you wish to map the selected old labels.

    • Press ALT+N, and the use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to move the highlight cursor to the New Label you wish to map.

Tip: It makes the recode process much easier if you choose the New Label you wish to map, prior to choosing Old Labels.

  1. Select the old label(s) you wish to map or unmap, choose one of the following:

  1. To map selected old label(s) choose one of the following:

    • Use the mouse to drag the selected old label(s) to the desired new label. If multiple old labels are selected, you need only drag one of the selected labels.

    • Double-click on a selected old label.

    • Click the right mouse button, from the right mouse menu, choose Create Mapping.

    • Click the mTABWin00000027.gif icon on the toolbar.

    • From the Edit menu, choose Create Mapping.

The Mapping column in the center will display the New Label mapped.

  1. To unmap selected old label(s) choose one of the following:

    • Click the right mouse button, from the right mouse menu, choose Remove Mapping.

    • Click the mTABWin00000028.gif icon on the toolbar.

    • From the Edit menu, choose Remove Mapping.

The Mapping column in the center will remove the mapped label.
