Creating A Recode
Step 1: Create Recode Description
All recode questions need to be given a unique recode description. This
description identifies your recode within the Available Question and Topics list.
- Choose one of the following:
- Click on the Recode Description text box located near the top of the Recode
Editor screen.
- Press ALT+R.
- Type in the desired Recode Description. For example, type in
“College / Non-College Education”. Once you have typed in the desired description, press the TAB key, or click
on the any other section of the recode editor to complete the entry.
Step 2: Create New Response Labels
This step will describe how to create, edit, and delete new labels for a
recode question.

Copy Old Labels To New
Editing New Labels
Deleting New Labels
Step 3: Mapping Old Labels To New Labels
Step 4: Saving A Recode
This step will describe how to save recodes you have created. By default,
recodes will last the length of your mTABwin session unless you save them.
Keep in mind that it is not necessary to save every recode created. If a
recode is relatively small and non-complex, or something that you may only use
once, you may not want to save it. This is much like using a speadsheet to create
some temporary calculations. The worksheet is useful for the calculations
made, but you would not necessarily want to save the sheet.
On the other hand, if a recode is large and complex, or is something you use
on a regular basis, you would want to save the recode.
